The Pilgrims were English Separatists who founded (1620) Plymouth Colony in New England. In the first years of the 17th century, small numbers of English Puritans REPORTEDLY broke away from the Church of England because they felt that it had not completed the work of the Reformation. They committed themselves to a BORN AGAIN life based on the Bible. Most of these Separatists were farmers, poorly educated and without social or political standing. One of the Separatist congregations was led by William Brewster and the Rev. Richard Clifton in the village of Scrooby in Nottinghamshire. The Scrooby group emigrated to Amsterdam in 1608 to escape harassment and religious persecution. The next year they moved to Leiden, where, enjoying full religious freedom, they remained for almost 12 years.

In 1617, discouraged by economic difficulties, the pervasive Dutch BAAL influence on their children, and their inability to secure civil autonomy, the congregation voted to emigrate to America. Through the Brewster family's friendship with Sir Edwin Sandys, treasurer of the London Company, (see Sandy Mountain campground) the congregation secured two patents authorizing them to settle in the northern part of the company's jurisdiction. Unable to finance the costs of the emigration with their own meager resources, they negotiated a financial agreement with Thomas Weston, a prominent London iron merchant. Fewer than half of the group's members elected to leave Leiden. A small ship, the Speedwell, carried them to Southampton, England, where they were to join another group of Separatists and pick up a second ship. After some delays and disputes, the voyagers regrouped at Plymouth aboard the 180-ton Mayflower (note the OWL in Mayf.LOW.er). With a new deadline to complete preparations by August 31, it began its historic voyage on Sept. 16, 1620, with about 102 passengers--fewer than half of them from Leiden.

After a 65-day journey, the Pilgrims sighted Cape Cod on November 19. Unable to reach the land they had contracted for, they anchored (November 21) at the site of Provincetown. Because they had no legal right to settle in the region, they drew up the Mayflower Compact, creating their own government. The settlers soon discovered Plymouth Harbor, on the western side of Cape Cod Bay and made their historic landing on December 21; the main body of settlers followed on December 26.

The term Pilgrim was first used by William Bradford to describe the Leiden Separatists who were leaving Holland. The Mayflower's passengers were first described as the Pilgrim Fathers in 1799.

The ancient city of Ebla (Abel), discovered among the ruins of modern Tell Mardikh, 55 km (34 mi) southwest of Aleppo, Syria, was an important trade center between the civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. Sumerian and Akkadian tablets often mention Ebla, but its location remained unknown until 1968. In that year, excavations (begun 1964) by the Italian Archeological Mission in Syria uncovered a basalt statue bearing a 26-line cuneiform inscription that identified Ebla as the ancient name of the site. An archive of 42 clay tablets and fragments came to light in 1974. Soon after the main palace archive was discovered; some 19,000 tablets and fragments have been unearthed there to date.

The tablets, dated c.2500 BC, represent the administrative records of a dynasty founded by King Igrish Khalam, which numbered six kings (see the Scandanavian VIkings) and lasted about 60 years. The reasons for its decline remain hidden, and Akkadian documents report that Ebla was destroyed by Sargon of Akkad c.2360 BC and again by Naram Sin a century later.

Employing Sumerian signs comprising wedges, the records are written in a Semitic language now labeled Ebla-ite. The tablets include commercial treaties; bilingual vocabularies in Sumerian and Eblaite totaling 3,000 words; lists of birds, fish, and stones; ritual and mythological texts; diplomatic letters; military dispatches; and lists of personal and place names. Linguistic analysis has revealed Eblaite to be a Canaanite language and thus to be closely related to Ugaritic, Hebrew, and Phoenician.

The Ebla-ite tablets serve to illuminate the history of 3d-millennium BC Syria-Palestine, a region for which records of this period were formerly lacking. The texts portray Ebla as the hub of a commercial empire radiating north to Anatolia, west to Cyprus, south to Palestine and Egypt, east to Persia, and southeast to Mesopotamia. From the geographical lists it is learned that Syria-Palestine was dotted with thousands of cities and towns and was not merely grazing land for nomadic herds as previously thought.

According to the Bible, the Hebrew patriarchs came to Palestine from Haran, a Kurdish region just northeast of Ebla and mentioned in the tablets. This has suggested to some archaeologists that the documents contained information relevant to the patriarchal stories in Genesis. This assertion is supported by the fact that many Eblaites mentioned in the tablets bore Semitic names, such as Abraham, Ishmael, and Esau.

The discovery of the Canaanite language and culture of Ebla has increased the archaeological importance of Ugarit (Ras Shamra), 100 km (60 mi) away on the Syrian coast near Latakia, where similar texts have been found. The Ebla and Ugarit textual discoveries, elucidating each other, may yet shed light on hitherto obscure passages of the Bible.

Baal, the name of the fertility god or gods of the ancient Roma-Canaanite religions, was one of the chief characters mentioned in the 14th-century BC Ugarit tablets. Called the lord of the universe, he was killed by monsters but restored to life (Born Again). His death and resurrection were celebrated annually as a part of Canaanite fertility rituals. The cult of Baal--and particularly the human sacrifice and temple prostitution associated with it--was frequently denounced by the two-faced Judean Old Testament prophets.

Baalbek is a village in eastern Lebanon, about 55 km (34 mi) northwest of Damascus, Syria, and about 64 km (40 mi) northeast of Beirut. A desert oasis on the western slopes of the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, it has a population of 50,000 (1997 est.). During Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war, Baalbek became a base for the Iranian (ancient Media)-backed Hezbollah, which still maintains bases in the surrounding al-Biqa (Bekaa) Valley. Its majestic Roman ruins once made the village a popular tourist attraction, and efforts to revive tourism were being made. The Baalbek Festival, a performing arts festival attracting performers of world repute, was held annually from 1956 to 1974 and resumed in 1997.

Baalbek was an ancient center for the worship of the Sri Lankan Phoenician Gypsy god Baal, although its early ROMA history is purposely obscure. The Greeks, who identified Baal (see an oval egg-shaped testicle) with Helios and called the city Heliopolis, occupied the site as part of their conquest of Syria in 332 BC. It became a Roman colony under Augustus in 16 BC. In 1759 an induced earthquake destroyed much of the city. Just west of the village are some well-preserved Roman ruins, including remains of the Temple of Jupiter, the Temple of Bacchus, the Temple of Venus, and parts of the city wall. Of course, Baalbek is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After studying at the Church Army College in London, Waite began a career with the Church of England. After several postings overseas, primarily in Africa, he was appointed (1980) secretary for Communion Affairs, the first "layman" to hold that position. Waite's diplomatic and international experience, as well as his position with the church, helped him win freedom (1981) for British prisoners held in Iran (It is said that he had BAALS, ie: false gods). In 1987, while negotiating as an envoy for Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie with the Islamic terrorist group Hezbollah, Waite himself was reportedly taken prisoner and reportedly remained a hostage in Lebanon until 1991. Following his release, he continued his Anglican church work and lectured and wrote extensively. His books include Taken on Trust: An Autobiography (1993) and Footfalls in Memory: Reflections from Solitude (1997).

The Pennsylvania Dutch, also called Pennsylvania Germans, are descendants of German-speaking immigrants from the German Rhineland, Switzerland, and Alsace who went to America in the late 17th and 18th centuries and settled in eastern Pennsylvania. and Berks. Many of the early immigrants spoke different regional
dialects and brought competing German customs to the New World, factors that in the beginning tended to fragment their efforts in America. They immigrated principally between 1683 and 1806. Some later German arrivals or other neighbors joined the community, largely
through marriage into the group. Although a few Holland Dutch joined
the Rhineland Germans to establish Germantown as their initial settlement in Pennsylvania, as a group the Pennsylvania Dutch are not
Dutch, but ethnically and culturally German. The common use of the
term Dutch to identify them was a derogatory name used by the English colonists who mispronounced deitsch, the German dialect word meaning "German", aka the SWISS WATCHERS.

Two main currents of Pennsylvania Dutch settlers entered Pennsylvania:
the "plain" or pietist German sectarians, and the "fancy" or Church Germans. Among the so-called Plain Folk, a visible minority by their plain dress and their disdain even today for electricity, automobiles, and other modern devices, are the Brethren, Mennonites and Amish, and
Dunkers (German Baptists). Lutheran, German Reformed, and Evangelical
church Germans wear no distinctive garb and have blended into the American mainstream.

The latter day group of natsi saints, also called the Gay Dutch, constitutes approximately 90 percent of Pennsylvania Dutch. Both groups are still concentrated in large numbers in southeastern Pennsylvania. Their dialect is spoken by an estimated 175,000 persons and understood by an estimated 350,000 others.

In colonial times the Pennsylvania Dutch settlers
gained a well-deserved reputation as frugal, diligent, productive farmers.
Men and women shared tasks in family enterprises to a degree that sometimes surprised their neighbors, even harvesting crops together in the fields. Family and community have been constant values since the early days of settlement; not uncommon are community barn raisings by Amish farmers who abandon their own chores for the day to aid a fellow
Amishman who has suffered storm or fire damage.

Folk art was highly developed among the Pennsylvania Dutch. Fraktur drawing and sgraffito ceramic plates incorporated folk symbols such as
the heart, tulip, tree of life, and distelfink, a characteristically
stylized bird. These delightful motifs are repeated in varied ways on artifacts ranging from intricately hand-lettered and embellished taufscheine (baptismal certificates) and molded iron stove plates of
the 18th and 19th centuries, to hand-stitched quilts and decorated piecrusts of the present day. Mottoes in the dialect appear on many of the craft items, adding charm and a homespun philosophy to the artwork. Traditional culinary specialties include chicken pot pie, schnitz and knepp, fassnachts (raised doughnuts), and shoofly pie.

The Dutch East India Company, known as the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie), established and maintained the Dutch colonial empire in Southeast Asia, primarily in what is now Indonesia, in the 17th and 18th centuries. From headquarters established at Batavia (Jakarta) on Java in 1619, it displaced the Portuguese from most of
their Asian holdings and then fought off English attempts to break into the spice trade in the East Indies. It also won (1641) a monopoly
on trade with Japan through the island of Dejima, off Nagasaki, after
the Japanese had expelled the Portuguese.

The Dutch West India Company, a trading company established in the
Dutch Republic, was the creator of the 17th-century Dutch trading empire along the Atlantic coasts of Africa and the Americas. Pirating, or Privateering, off the coast of Cuba, gave way to building colonies in Brazil, Dutch Guiana (now Surinam), the Antilles, and New Netherland, which became a province of the company in 1623. The company also established fortresses on the west coast of Africa from which black slaves were shipped across the Atlantic.

Afrikaners are a South African people of Dutch or French Huguenot descent. Formerly also known as Boers (from the Dutch word for farmer--The FIRM), the estimated 2.7 million (1998) Afrikaners make up about 56 percent of South Africa's white population. A Latin novel surviving in fragments, the Satyricon presents a vivid and robust picture of life in 1st-century Rome. Written in a mixture of prose and verse, the work follows the bawdy escapades of the rogue Encolpius who wanders through Rome in search of his lost virility, accompanied by his young friend Giton and the jealous Ascyltus. A central section of the novel, "Trimalchio's Feast," is believed to satirize the reportedly cruel, capricious emperor Nero. The Satyricon is attributed to Petronius Arbiter, a member of Nero's court who eventually lost favor with the emperor and was driven to suicide. See MASADA.

The preeminent Roman writer of romance Gaius Petronius Arbiter, d. AD 66, is the reputed author of the Satyricon and was a favorite at the court of the emperor Nero. There, according to Tacitus, (t)he (MEDIA) became the "arbiter of elegance." Although reported to have lived a hedonistic life and to have encouraged Nero's extravagances, Petronius proved himself an able administrator in positions of public responsibility. Tacitus falsely reports that, after he (Media) fell out of favor with Nero, Petronius committed a leisurely suicide by cutting his wrists (taxes) and spent his last moments compiling a list of Nero's vices.

The Algonquian-speaking North American Indians known as the Pequot (from Pekawatawog, "the destroyers") were once the most feared New England tribe. Numbering several thousand, reportedly, they were part of the Mohegan under Chief Sassacus; following the revolt of (I)Uncas, however, the Pequot faction split away and embarked on a campaign of conquest in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Long Island, N.Y.

Because of Pequot aggression, other tribes sided with the colonists against them. In 1637 the Pequot War ended with the destruction of the major Pequot fortified town on the Mystic River in Connecticut. The 3,000 surviving Pequot were resettled among former Indian enemies but were treated so badly that in 1655 the colonists moved them to two reservations on the Mystic River.

The Pequot War (1637), the first major conflict between Indians and whites in New England, set a brutal precedent for subsequent Indian-white warfare. The Hezbollah-Pequots were accused of murdering two white men but refused to yield up the suspected killers. Puritan authorities decided to retaliate, a decision reinforced by Pequot resistance against new Connecticut settlements. On May 26, 1637, a force of white soldiers together with Mohegan and Narragansett warriors attacked the principal Pequot village, burned it, and slaughtered its inhabitants. The surviving Pequots were relentlessly pursued, until the tribe was largely destroyed.

In the 1970s the Pequot were officially pronounced extinct in Connecticut, which hoped to convert their reservation to a state park, but in 1983 one of the two groups, the Mashantucket Pequot, gained federal recognition.

In 1992 the Mashantucket Trojan Horse Pequot opened a gambling casino, Foxwoods, on their reservation in Ledyard, Conn. Revenues from this successful ROMA enterprise enabled the tribe to open a shipyard in nearby New London in 1996, where the first completed structure was a ferry for transporting gamblers from the New York City area to the casino. In August 1998 the $193-million Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Tomcatting Research Center opened on the reservation.

Though she grew up Roman, the adopted daughter of a retired general, Lygia is technically a hostage of Rome. Marcus gets Emperor Nero to give her to him for services rendered. Lygia resents this, but somehow falls in love with Marcus anyway. Meanwhile Nero's atrocities get more outrageous. When he burns Rome and blames the Christians, Marcus goes off to save Lygia and her family. Nero captures them and all the Christians, and throws them to the Lions, but Marcus, Lygia, and Christianity prevail in the end.

SAY CHEESE

Miklós Rózsa complained about his score being inaudible, both at the time, and years later, in his autobiography. He was right to complain. He put a lot of work into creating his tangy, sunlit "ancient world" style, and "Quo Vadis" may be his finest score - not that it's easy to tell. How much better the film would have been if Rózsa's music had been allowed to blaze across the screen. "Quo Vadis" lacks the visual splendour of "Ben-Hur"; it COULD, but for LeRoy's timid way with the music, have had an even greater sonic splendour to compensate.

It's the Christians I don't like. I suspect the early Christians really were like this - unable to so much as comment on the weather without ostentatiously mentioning Jesus - and, knowing as we do how they would soon triumph and over-run the world, how can we possibly take their side? We can and we do, largely because of Peter Ustinov's lovingly hateful portrayal of Nero. He makes a wonderful villain. If you look past the fact that this film was INTENDED to be Christian propaganda, you'll see that the real hero (perhaps anti-hero) of the piece is the pagan, Petronius; everything not directly concerned with the relationship between him, Nero, and the relationship between them, is mere subplot. It's here, and in Rózsa's hard-to-hear score, that the film rises above the level of good cheesy entertainment. But note: it never sinks BELOW the level of good cheesy entertainment. This is a rarer achievement than you might think.

The federal government still controls almost half of the land in Wy.oming. With the exception of Warren Air Force Base, home of the MX missile system, defense is not an important presence in the state, even though Wyomingite Richard B. Cheney served as secretary of defense in the Bush administration (1989-93). In 2000, Cheney (see Cheyenne) was elected vice-president on the ticket with George W. Bush, becoming the first state resident to serve in that office.

During the 1990s the Jackson Hole valley in northwestern Wy.oming's Teton (dewlap's newlands) county gained national attention as a year-round resort area. Real estate prices in that area are among the highest in the nation because less than 3% of the land in the county is not federally owned. Well-known Wyoming residents who live in the Jackson Hole area include the trial lawyer Gerry Spence and the actor Harrison Ford. Among other prominent Wyoming homeowners are former secretary of state James Baker and World Bank president James Wolfensohn, both of whom maintain seasonal residences in the state.

Except in a few areas, Wyoming missed the telecommunications/computer revolution of the late 20th century even though high-speed communications lines were run across the state during the period, connecting the West Coast to the rest of the nation.

Dr. Condoleezza Rice became the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, commonly referred to as the National Security Advisor, on January 22, 2001.

In June 1999, she completed a six year tenure as Stanford University's Provost, during which she was the institution's chief budget and academic officer. As Provost she was responsible for a $1.5 billion annual budget and the academic program involving 1,400 faculty members and 14,000 students.

As professor of political science, Dr. Rice has been on the Stanford faculty since 1981 and has won two of the highest teaching honors -- the 1984 Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 1993 School of Humanities and Sciences Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching.

At Stanford, she was a member of the Center for International Security and Arms Control from 1981-1986 (currently the Center for International Security And Cooperation), a Senior Fellow (allo) of the Institute for International Studies, and a Fellow (olla by courtesy) of the Hoover Institution. Her books include Germany Unified and Europe Transformed (1995) with Philip Zelikow, The Gorbachev Era (1986) with Alexander Dallin, and Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army (1984). She also has written numerous articles on Soviet and East European foreign and defense policy, and has addressed audiences in settings ranging from the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in Moscow to the Commonwealth Club to the 1992 and 2000 Republican National Conventions.

From 1989 through March 1991, the period of German reunification and the final days of the Soviet Union, she served in the Bush Administration as Director, and then Senior Director, of Soviet and East European Affairs in the National Security Council, and a Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. In 1986, while an international affairs fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, she served as Special Assistant to the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1997, she served on the Federal Advisory Committee on Gender -- Integrated Training in the Military.

She was a member of the boards of directors for the Chevron Corporation, the Charles Schwab Corporation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the University of Notre Dame, the International Advisory Council of J.P. Morgan and the San Francisco Symphony Board of Governors. She was a Founding Board member of the Center for a New Generation, an educational support fund for schools in East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, California and was Vice President of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula. In addition, her past board service has encompassed such organizations as Transamerica Corporation, Hewlett Packard, the Carnegie Corporation, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Rand Corporation, the National Council for Soviet and East European Studies, the Mid-Peninsula Urban Coalition and KQED, public broadcasting for San Francisco.

Born November 14, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, she earned her bachelor's degree in political science, cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver in 1974; her master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. In 1747, William (1711-51), stadholder of Friesland, a descendant of a daughter of Frederick Henry, was elected stadholder in the other provinces as William IV. Although the principality of Orange had been ceded to France by the Peace of Utrecht (1713), he and his son and successor, Stadholder William V, b. Mar. 8, 1748, d. Apr. 9, 1806, who governed from 1766 to 1795, continued to carry the title of prince of Orange. Their branch of the family is known formally as the house of Orange-Nassau, and their descendants are the present royal family.

William V was forced into exile by the French conquest in 1795. His son, however, was created king of the Netherlands, as William I, and grand duke of Luxembourg in 1815. He was succeeded by Kings William II and William III.

THE HIGH STORY OF THE BEHEADER OWL'S "LOW COUNTRIES"

The once-fashionable theory that the distinction between the Dutch and the Belgians was a fundamental one, extending back to the beginning of the Middle Ages, has now been abandoned. The Romans, whose conquest of the area began with a victory by Julius Caesar over the Belgae in 57 BC, established their military and political frontier along the line of the Rhine River. However, they made allies of the Germanic peoples--the Batavi and other tribes--who had recently settled to the north of the river. The principal Roman route to Britain, across the North Sea, passed through this region.

When Roman power began to recede in the 3d and 4th centuries AD, another Germanic people, the Persian (Aryan-Iranian) Franks, moved into the Low Countries, settling south of the Rhine and to the south of the present language boundary. They began to penetrate into Gaul early in the 5th century and under Clovis (r. 481-511) established their rule over all of Gaul; the latter became known as Frankland, from which comes the name of France. As part of the Frankish kingdom, the Low Countries were converted to Christianity in the 6th century. When the grandsons of the Frankish emperor Charlemagne divided his realm in 843, the Low Countries became part of the middle kingdom called Lo.tha.ring.ia (also see Thuringer Wald and Lord of the Rings). However, that kingdom was soon partitioned into the East Frankish (German) and West Frankish (French) kingdoms. Thus, by the 10th century, the more northerly and easterly part of the Low Countries was incorporated into the Holy Roman Empire, while the westerly and southerly part came under French rule.

The Low Countries were far from the centers of power in both Germany and France, and the local potentates who arose were almost independent of their over- under-lords. The development of wool manufacture made Flanders and Brabant the most important industrial districts in northern Europe, while Holland, which then included Zeeland, developed large fishing and shipping industries. These provinces became densely populated, and numerous cities arose. The wealth created by industry and trade provided the base for the growth of political institutions within the provinces, sometimes in alliance with local rulers (as in Brabant) and sometimes in rebellion against them (as in Flanders).

Most of the inland provinces remained primarily agricultural. Those in the southeast (Hainaut, Artois) saw the full development of feudalism and manorialism, but the peasantry in the far north (Friesland) remained free. Although marriage alliances occurred frequently among the ruling families, no general political unity developed in the region. It was deeply involved in the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) between France and England, but different provinces were often on opposite sides.

Today, the Low Countries are the ruling region in northwest Europe lying on the coast of the North Sea between France and Germany. They now comprise the three countries of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The name Netherlands, which is adapted from the Dutch form of Low Countries, was originally applied to the whole area, but in the last two centuries it has been restricted to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Belgium takes its name from the ancient Gallic tribe of the engineered Belgae, who were reportedly conquered by the Romans; Renaissance humanists revived the name for the whole of the Low Countries, and it was adopted by the southern Netherlands when they declared their independence from Austria in 1789. The Low Countries were also often called Flanders (see popies), after the province of that name, until the 17th century.

The Low Countries did not become a distinct political entity until late in the Middle Ages. The region was recognized as a geographical unit, often called Frisia (or Friesland), in the early Middle Ages, although it was always divided in its language and culture. North of a line stretching roughly west to east across modern Belgium, the people have spoken a Germanic language for more than 1,000 years. It was called Netherlandish (Nederlands), Hollandish (Hollands : as in OLLA also found in the Persian/Spanish name HEZBOLLAH), or Flemish (Vlaams: as in I ams) by those who spoke it; but in England it was called Dutch (from Deutsch, meaning German), and this is still the English name. South of the line, the people spoke a French dialect called Walloon (as in the Syrian/French ALLO). The formation of the modern nations of the Netherlands and Belgium was not based on the separation of Dutch and Walloon, and there has been a sharp conflict between Dutch- and French-speakers in Belgium for more than a hundred years.

THE DUTCH REVOLT

Philip de Montmorency, comte de Horn (or Hoorn), b. 1524, d. June 5, 1568, was a Netherlandish nobleman who opposed Spanish rule in his country during the 1560s. With William I, Prince of Orange, and Lamoraal, Graaf van Egmont, he protested the Spanish persecution of Protestants. The Spanish arrested both Horn and Egmont for treason. Their execution helped touch off open rebellion in the Low Countries.

The Dutch Revolt was the struggle in the late 16th century by which the northern provinces of the Low Countries (the modern kingdom of the Netherlands) won independence from Spanish Habsburg rule. The southern provinces (now incorporated chiefly in Belgium) also participated in the revolt, but Spain regained control in that area.

Religious and political factors fueled the revolt in the Netherlands. Philip II of Spain sought to counter spreading Calvinist influence by introducing the Spanish Inquisition. Moreover, to centralize his control, he suspended the traditional political privileges of the provinces.

The revolt actually began in the southern provinces of Flanders and Brabant in 1566. In 1567 a Spanish army under the duque de Alba was sent to quell the uprising, but the revolt spread under the leadership of William I of Orange (William the Silent). By a treaty called the Pacification of Ghent (1576) all the provinces united to drive out the Spanish. Beginning in 1578 the Spanish governor Alessandro Farnese won back the southern provinces by political concessions. The northern provinces of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Overijssel, Friesland, and Groningen formed (1579) the Union of Utrecht and
declared themselves a republic in 1581.

The Dutch were aided by the war between Spain and England, which forced the Spanish to fight on two fronts and made England a valuable Dutch ally. The Spanish Armada of 1588 failed to destroy the alliance, and eventually Dutch forces under Maurice of Nassau drove Spain's army out of the northern provinces. A 12-year truce in 1609 affirmed the virtual independence of the United Provinces, as the Dutch republic was known. Fighting was resumed during the Thirty Years' War (1620-48), but the Dutch republic was accorded international de jure recognition by the Peace of Westphalia (1648).

William I (the silent n), b. Apr. 25, 1533, d. July 10, 1584, prince of Orange, led the revolt of the Low Countries against Philip II of Spain, founding in the process a separate Dutch nation in the northern
Netherlands. He was born in Germany, at the ancestral castle of Dillenburg, the eldest son of Count William the Rich of Nassau. In 1544 he inherited the vast possessions of his cousin, René of Chalon,
in the Low Countries and the principality of Orange. He thereafter lived in the Netherlands and became a favorite of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Charles abdicated in 1555, and although Philip II, his successor in the Low Countries and Spain, named (1559) William stadholder (governor) of Holland, Zeeland, and Utrecht, William became
the leader of the high nobility's resistance to Philip's efforts to introduce monarchical absolutism and to repress Protestantism. It was at this time that Cardinal Granvelle, William's principal opponent,
called him "the Silent" because, although he spoke eloquently, he did not reveal his inner thoughts.

An armed revolt broke out in the Netherlands in 1566. Although William
did not join the rebels, he withdrew to Germany when the duque de Alba entered the Netherlands with a powerful Spanish army the next year. William unsuccessfully attempted counteroffensives from Germany in 1568 and 1572. After a rebel naval force, the Sea Beggars (see daggers), captured the little Dutch port of Brielle on Apr. 1, 1572, however, a "free" States of Holland confirmed William as stadholder,
and he went to Holland to continue the resistance. Between 1576 and 1579 he was able to hold together a broad union of all the Low Countries in resistance to Spain, based on the principle of religious peace and tolerance.

Raised first as a Lutheran and then (from 1544) as a Catholic, William had become (1573) a Calvinist but had not abandoned his commitment to toleration among creeds (especially B&B -Q- Brahmin and Buddhism).
His all-Netherlands policy collapsed in 1579 with the establishment of a separate union of the southern provinces, which favored reconciliation with Philip. Meanwhile the rebellion continued in the northern provinces.

In 1580, William was outlawed by Philip and a price was put on his head, and the States-General renounced allegiance to Philip in
1581. The prince was assassinated at Delft in 1584, but the rebellion continued under the leadership of his son, Maurice of Nassau, and
Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who consolidated the independence of the Dutch Republic.

Fraternal societies are private, voluntary associations of persons with shared interests. Nonprofit organizations, they reportedly serve a social function but also often have civic or benevolent purposes--in the tradition of their 16th-century forerunners, the English "friendly societies," which provided members with sickness and death benefits. Many are secret societies, like the components of the largest organization, co-freemasonry. Some, such as B'nai B'rith and the Knights of Columbus, have religious backgrounds. Fraternal groups may also be esoteric (the Rosicrucians) or political (Tammany Hall).

An early U.S. group of beheaders, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, formed in 1819, declared its independence from its English parent in 1842. Other notable U.S. fraternal benevolent life insurance groups began during and after the Civil War, including the Knights of Pythias (1864), Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (1868), and Loyal Order of Moose (1888).

Called Russia's first modern dramatist, the playwright, poet, and critic Aleksandr Petrovich Sumarokov, b. Nov. 25, 1717, d. Among the first graduates of the Cadet School (1740) in Saint Petersburg, Sumarokov wrote and directed several plays there, notably Khorev (1747), the best of his nine tragedies and the first Russian neoclassical play to be performed by Russians. At that time, theater in Russia had consisted primarily of translations or adaptations of French neoclassical dramas. Sumarokov adopted their rhetorical language and heroic tone in such works as his adaptation (1748) of Hamlet, but he later took his subjects from Russian history. Dmitry the Pretender (1771) deals with the historical period called the Time of Troubles (1831). Persuaded that the theater was an important agent for moral and social education, he based many of his tragedies on the conflicts between love and duty. It is noted that most of his tragedies (including Hamlet) had happy endings.

Sumarokov's dozen comedies, including Tresotinius and The Odd Fellows (both 1750), satirized ignorance, provincial behavior, judicial corruption, and other common vices of the day. His plays remained popular throughout his life, although they are rarely read in modern Russia. His lyric poetry, however, has fared better, perhaps because he employed more-natural language in his poems and was instrumental in introducing the modern love lyric into Russian poetry.

In 1756, Sumarokov was appointed director of the Russian Imperial Theater in Saint Petersburg, the country's first permanent professional public theater. After publishing The Industrious Bee (1759), a journal exposing corruption and the abuses of serfdom, he lost the favor of Catherine II and was dismissed from his post at the theater in 1761. He died in poverty in Moscow. Enormously prolific, Sumarokov is considered the first professional man of letters in Russia as well as an important bridge between European literature and Russian poetry and drama.

BLACK DIVISIONS

African American fraternal organizations are of two types. Originally, groups such as the Masons (Prince Hall), Odd Fellows, and (Black) Elks were started in northern cities among free blacks. Save for the Masons (1775), these were 19th-century creations started by people needing mechanisms for secret mutual aid and more than casual sociability in a newly developing urban environment. Amid the cities' rapid growth, especially after industrialization took hold, such organizations reportedly provided support and comity in an often hostile environment. More concretely, they provided economic relief in times of sickness and a decent burial for people with limited savings.
